Google Business Profile checklist for Indian businesses (2026)

By TORQUE · 14 October 2026 · 6 min read

A complete, verified and accurate Google Business Profile is the single most useful local SEO task. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and it also states there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. These 14 points cover what is in your control.

Set-up checklist

  1. Verify the profile. Google says verification makes it more likely you appear in results.
  2. Use your real business name. Follow Google's guidelines: no keywords or locations stuffed into the name.
  3. Pick the best primary category, then add only secondary categories that truly apply (for a hotel: Hotel, not a list of loosely related terms).
  4. Enter the exact address and drop the map pin on the entrance. If you serve customers at their location, set a service area instead.
  5. Add regular and special hours. Update festival and holiday hours in advance. Google warns that inaccurate details can stop the profile showing for relevant local searches.
  6. Add a phone number that is answered, and a WhatsApp or enquiry link if customers prefer it.
  7. Link the website to the most relevant page. A hotel with its own site should link to that hotel's page, not a group home page.
  8. Fill in attributes such as parking, Wi-Fi, accessibility and payment options, only where true.
  9. Write a clear description in plain sentences. Say what you do and where, without claims you cannot back up.
  10. Add services or products with honest descriptions.
  11. Upload real photos of the exterior, interior, team and work. Replace outdated ones.
  12. Ask every happy customer for a review, by sharing your review link in person, on the bill or on WhatsApp. Never buy reviews or offer rewards that break Google's rules.
  13. Reply to every review, including negative ones, calmly and specifically.
  14. Match everything elsewhere. The name, address and phone on your website and listings should be identical to the profile.

Mistakes that cost visibility

How often to revisit

Review the profile monthly: hours, photos, new reviews and any wrong suggested edits from the public. Google recommends reviewing it regularly and fixing anything outdated.

Note for multi-branch businesses. Give each branch its own profile, its own page on your website and consistent naming. Our work for a five-hotel group follows this pattern, with a separate website and profile for each hotel and links back to the group.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay Google for a higher local ranking?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for better local ranking. Complete, accurate information, reviews and prominence are what you can influence.

How many reviews do I need?

There is no magic number. Keep a steady flow of genuine, recent reviews and reply to them.
