Local SEO

Local SEO in India: a plain guide for small businesses

By TORQUE · 14 October 2026 · 7 min read

Local SEO means appearing when people near you search for what you sell. Google says three things decide local results: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence with an accurate Business Profile, useful pages, consistent listings and genuine reviews.

The three ranking ideas, in Google's words

Five things to fix first

  1. Your Business Profile. Follow the 14-point checklist.
  2. Consistent name, address and phone across your site and every directory. Pick one spelling and use it everywhere.
  3. A page for each location and each main service. Real pages with real details such as address, directions, timings and photos. Do not create dozens of near-identical pages for every town; Google treats that as doorway spam.
  4. Reviews. Ask at the moment the customer is happiest, and reply to all of them.
  5. A fast mobile site with a tap-to-call and tap-to-WhatsApp button. Most local searches happen on a phone.

Language and Hinglish

Around 57% of Indian internet users prefer regional languages (Kantar and IAMAI). Customers also type Hindi in English letters. Check which words real customers use, using your Search Console queries and the questions that arrive on WhatsApp, and use those words naturally in headings and answers. Do not translate everything mechanically; translate the pages that earn enquiries. State by state notes.

Directories: useful, but accuracy first

Listing your business on well-known Indian and industry directories can help customers find you, and consistent details across them support prominence. The rule is accuracy over volume: ten correct listings beat a hundred inconsistent ones. Remove or update duplicates and old addresses.

Content that earns local searches

Answer the questions local customers ask: how far from the railway station, where to park, what is open on Sunday, how an enquiry works. For hotels this often means landmark pages: the hospital, consulate, mall or station that guests are visiting. We explain this with a real example in landmark pages for hotels.

Measure honestly

Expect weeks for fixes to register and months for compounding gains. Anyone promising "page one in 7 days" is guessing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a website for local SEO?

A Business Profile can work without one, but a website with clear pages for your services and location gives search and AI tools more to rely on. Studies of local AI answers show a business's own website is a frequently cited source.

Should I buy backlinks?

No. Prominence comes from genuine mentions, local partnerships, press and reviews. Bought links risk penalties.
